Native American Art At Cafepress.com

Well, I have new designs at my store now. Different Native American symbols on a variety of products. There'll be more colorful symbols to come.

The colors were derived by first looking at my Pantone Color Bridge swatch and picking a desired first color. Then looked at the color wheel and decided whether to use analogous, complementary, four-tone chord, split-complementary, or monochrome.

A Light Tent For Those On A Budget

I've been researching different light tent products for macro photography and I couldn't justify the high prices for some of these products.

Well, I was able to build one (actually two) of my own, and thanks to the fellow at this website, saved myself quite a bit of cashola.

I made a ghetto one made out of cardboard (about 16 inches all around) with a white shower curtain to diffuse the light. The lights are two GE Daylight rated lightbulbs at 6500K. The two lamps were 11 bucks each. You can't go wrong!

The other tent is made out of PVC (about 14 inches all around) and the diffusers are Cracked Ice Light Panels. They do a great job! The panels are held in place with double sided velcro tape.

The PVC piping came at a minimum of 10 feet but the salesperson was kind enough to cut it in half so I could fit them in the car. I had to buy a PVC cutter ($10) to cut the pipes into 12 inch lengths. All the supplies were bought a Lowes with the exception of the shower curtain which I got from the dollar store. The table is from Ikea and it has a sort of diffused glass top which is great for any underlighting I might want to add in.

Here are a few test shots of one my knives in both tents - one of the best production knives out there - the Fallkniven A1. I think I'll have to follow the sunny 16 rule and shoot at f16 or f22 at 1/125 next time. Shooting at f5.6 didn't get me the detail I wanted. I'll have to really play around with lighting as shooting anything shiny, especially knives, is pretty tricky in the glare and shadows department.

The above photo had a greyish background on my first shot. I upped the exposure to about +1.3 to whiten the background without washing out the detail in the knife. It wasn't enough so I upped it to +2 and it was too overexposed so I left it at +1.3 and brought it into Photoshop and went Image>Adjustments>Exposure, fiddled with the Offset and Gamma, and got the result below.

The photos below faired a little better. I think the white posterboard in the previous two photos were a little overkill and emphasized reflections. Using black or some other neutral color posterboard revealed more detail and reduced glare.

Trying To Master Macro

Well, I've been trying to get a handle on using the Raynox DCR-250 on my Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ50. Can't wait for spring to catch candids of all the bugs...if I can get close enough to them.

For the one pictured here, I was about 4 inches away in Manual mode. There was limited ambient light so I added a little of my own using a Streamlight Stylus flashlight.

Represent Your National Soccer Team

Ok, I've been plugging away at soccer designs for t-shirts. It's going to take a while to get all countries represented so please be patient. Or, just email me if you'd like to see the design for your country right away or on another product.

Too Many Designs Not Enough Time

I've been quite busy with the cafepress store. The personalized keepsakes are doing well and I'm getting more requests on the martial arts side of design, but I can't wait until it gets warmer so I can get into macro photography and light painting photography. I'm totally new to this so it'll be awhile before I can sell some prints.

Ciao for now!

New Designs Up At The Store

I'm in the process of designing keepsake boxes that are personalized with names, the names in Chinese lettering and descriptive traits associated with the names. They make a great, meaningful and colorful gift!
